b. 7 March 1927, Charlestown, New Hampshire, USA, d. 1 November 1982, New Haven, Connecticut, USA. Broderick was raised in Manchester, New Hampshire and after graduating from New Hampshire University and serving in the US Navy during World War II, he joined a local theatre group and played in summer stock. Developing into a reliable character actor, in the early 50s Broderick played in stock company productions such as Time Out For Ginger and was on television in The Old Beginning and The Dancers.… Show more He made his Broadway debut in the musical Maggie (1953). From the mid-50s onward he was in Broadway and off-Broadway shows, most of them straight dramas: Johnny Johnson (1956, in which he played the title role), A View From The Bridge (1957), Two By Saroyan (1961), Johnny No-Trump (1967), Wedding Band (1972), and Let Me Hear You Smile (1973). In between these shows, Broderick made a five-month State Department-sponsored tour of Europe and the Middle East in The Glass Menagerie with Helen Hayes.

Often on television, Broderick co-starred as Officer Ernie Brenner in the police drama series Brenner (1959), and was the father in Family (1976). He was also in individual episodes of series such as The Bold Ones, The F.B.I. and Gunsmoke. He also appeared in one-off television dramas, including The Iceman Cometh (with Jason Robards) and John Brown (with James Mason). He was married to writer Patricia Broderick, with whom he had two daughters and a son; the latter is the stage and screen actor Matthew Broderick. ~ Rovi
